Swingin' Door BBQ
When you walk up to Swingin’ Door BBQ, it can be a little unsettling. It’s next to a gas station and if you park in the back parking lot, you actually pass the BBQ on your way into the restaurant.
The more refined diner might be a little perturbed by this but I ain’t no refined diner so I kind of dug it.
Once you step inside, it’s a nice little hole-in-the-wall and you’re greeted by a table of sauces. Being a sauce hound, I knew this was going to be the place for me.
It’s a basic menu and I got the combo plate of two meats and two sides. I went with the tri-tip and the burnt ends and then starched it up with both fries and mashed potatoes.
When the plate arrived, I was initially surprised how small the portions looked but then the little angel tapped on my shoulder and whispered in my ear, “Kevin. That’s why you’re fat!”
And the angel was indeed right. After the meal, I was full for the rest of the day and into the evening.
I’d never had burnt ends before and while they were good, I learned that I’m not a fan of the burnt taste so I’ll probably avoid that in the future. The tri-tip was juicy and tasty and I was a fan of both the fries and the mashed potatoes. My friends raved about the sausage so I might try that the next visit.
As for the sauces, we went with the Freaking Hot Sauce, Chipotle BBQ, and Whiskey BBQ. The Freaking Hot Sauce did have a nice kick to it; when I first tried it, I was non-plussed but once I breathed in, the heat announced its presence. But the sauce I found myself going back to more and more was the Chipotle BBQ. Just a great blend.
All in all, if you work in the Valley, Swingin’ Door BBQ deserves a spot in your lunch rotation. And, as they sell meat by the pound, it could also be a great spot to order up some grub if you’re having people over for a game or something. Give it a try!
